Mangalore, Sep 14: The state government suffered a major and humiliating set back after High Court asked it not to change the existing reservation policy for the mayoral post of Mangalore City Corporation as per which, the city will have a lady mayor.

The much expected verdict was out on Thursday September 14 in which the High Court directed the government not to change the criteria for the mayoral elections of MCC.  This is indeed a big set back to BJP-JD (S) government which had changed the reservation criteria from general woman to general category owing to the intervention by the district-in-charge minister B Nagaraj Shetty.  This had sparked stark oppose by the women corporators as well as leader of Congress party.  When the government had not paid a listening ear to their appeal, corporator Vijaya Arun had filed a petition with the High Court questioning government.

Now that the verdict is out, government and the in-charge minister B Nagaraj Shetty face a dicey situation of letting the people know as why they changed the reservation criteria.  Since BJP was not in a position to gain anything from the change, MCC is ruled by Congress, its motive behind changing the reservation remains highly mysterious.

While this is a victory for the women corporators of MCC, sources said that some Congress corporators who were dreaming of mayor's post and had even begun preparations for the elections, after the change in the reservation criteria are running for cover.

Finally the long-pending has been solved and it is now sure that the vastly-developing city will have a lady mayor soon.
