Mangaluru: Konkani writer Jonel Cassia passes away at 85

Mangaluru, Oct 1: Konkani writer Jonel Cassia, pen name of John Louis D’Souza, passed away at the age of 85 following a brief illness at a private hospital on September 30.

He had served as church vice-president for three terms and as editor of the church magazine. He was also the founding president of Cassia Catholic Sabha and had served as a member of the governing bodies of Father Muller Institutions and St Joseph Workshop. He also served as president of Konkani Bhasha Mandal-Karnataka and as a trustee of Souhardha Foundation.

His Konkani novels ‘Lotrecho Dudu’ and ‘Hankaracho Prathiphal’ were published, while several of his short stories and articles appeared in Konkani periodicals.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and relatives.

The funeral rites will be held at 4 pm on Friday, October 2 at St Rita Church, Cascia.
