Byndoor, Sep 2: Despite concerns over deficient rainfall affecting marine life breeding along the coast, traditional shore seine (Kairampani) fishermen in the Byndoor region are rejoicing over a bumper fish catch over the past week.

The lack of rain has surprisingly proven to be a boon for Kairampani fishing, which typically involves a team of 30 to 40 fishermen operating one or two boats near the shore. The fishermen are elated as they are netting high-quality fish species that are fetching excellent prices in the market, making this season highly profitable compared to recent years.

For the past week, a bountiful catch has been reported across the coastal stretches of Shiroor, Dombe, Kalihitlu, and Someshwara. On Tuesday, the 'Mahaganapathi' Kairampani boat at the Shiroor coast recorded a business of over Rs 3 lac. The nets were brimming with fresh catch, particularly croaker (Kodavai) and prawns.

Coastal residents, who have a strong preference for fresh fish, are flocking to the shores in large numbers. Unlike deep-sea fishing boats that return after two to three days, Kairampani boats offer immediately harvested, fresh fish. Consequently, customers eagerly gather at the beach and rush to purchase the catch as soon as the nets are hauled ashore.
