Mangaluru, Sep 1: The Konkani Natak Sabha® (KNS), Mangaluru, once again brought the magic of Konkani theatre to the stage as it successfully organised its Konkani Skit Competition on Sunday, August 30, at the historic Don Bosco Hall, Mangaluru. The evening witnessed three enthusiastic teams showcasing their talent, creativity and love for Konkani theatre.
The competition brought together teams from Modankap, Gantalkatte and Shirthady, creating an atmosphere filled with drama, entertainment, laughter and cultural pride.
Keeping the Legacy of Konkani Theatre Alive
The Skit Competition holds a special place in the long-standing journey of KNS. As an organisation founded with the vision of preserving, promoting and nurturing Konkani art, culture and theatre, KNS has consistently provided a platform for aspiring performers to discover and develop their talents.
The competition once again highlighted the importance of keeping the tradition of Konkani theatre alive, particularly among the younger generation. Through acting, storytelling and stage presentation, the participants demonstrated that the love for Konkani drama continues to remain strong.
An Inspiring Beginning
The programme began with a soulful rendition of the KNS Anthem, setting a vibrant and meaningful tone for the evening.
KNS president Fr Rocky D’Cunha OFM Cap welcomed the gathering and encouraged all the participating teams to perform with confidence, enthusiasm and dedication. He extended his best wishes to all the contestants before the performances began.
The traditional lighting of the lamp followed in the presence of Fr Rocky D’Cunha OFM Cap, KNS vice president Floyd D’Mello Cascia, and chief guest Avitas Adolphus Cutinha, popularly known as ‘Dolla Mangluru’, who enjoys a wide following among theatre and cultural enthusiasts.
Also present on the dais were KNS general secretary Pamela Santos, assistant secretary Jerome Moras, treasurer Ivan D’Silva, competition convener Stany Bela, and the distinguished panel of judges.
Dolla Mangluru Recalls His Special Bond with KNS
Addressing the gathering, chief guest Dolla Mangluru spoke warmly about his long association with Konkani Natak Sabha and Don Bosco Hall. Recalling his memorable connection with KNS, he spoke about the many dramas he had directed for the Sabha and the performances he had delivered on its historic stage.
He pointed out that the stage of Don Bosco Hall has been a starting point for numerous actors who later went on to make their mark in the Konkani theatre world.
Encouraging the contestants, he expressed hope that those performing on the stage that evening would continue their journey with dedication and one day emerge as leading actors of Konkani theatre. He also appreciated the continuous efforts of KNS in promoting Konkani culture and wished the organisation success in all its future initiatives.
Rules, Encouragement and Best Wishes
KNS vice president Floyd D’Mello Cascia briefed the participants about the competition rules and extended his appreciation to everyone involved in organising the event. He congratulated all three teams for taking up the challenge and stepping onto the stage.
He expressed confidence that such competitions would continue to grow in the coming years and inspire more young people to take an active interest in Konkani theatre.
Experienced Judges Evaluate the Performances
The performances were assessed by a distinguished panel of three experienced personalities with strong backgrounds in acting, direction, stage programmes and emceeing - Leslie Rego, Bendur; Maxim Rodrigues, Bondel; and Waltson Juvenish D'Sa, Pangla.
The judges carefully evaluated the performances and later shared valuable observations, practical suggestions and constructive feedback. Their guidance gave the participants an opportunity to understand their strengths and identify areas where they could further improve their acting, presentation, coordination and overall stage performance.
Three Teams Take Centre Stage
A total of three teams, Althodi Polthodi Panghad – Modankap, Utshahi Kalakar – Gantalkatte, Vin & Fly – Shirthady, participated in the competition:
Each team brought its own style and flavour to the stage. The performances reflected the participants' enthusiasm, teamwork, acting ability and commitment, while adding colour and energy to the evening.
Teamwork That Made the Event Possible
Behind the successful programme was the coordinated effort of the KNS team, managing committee members and volunteers.
KNS Mmanager Gerald Concessao and KNS staff member Mohini coordinated the programme efficiently. Ivan D’Silva and Jerome Moras handled the tabulation of scores with precision.
Members of the KNS Cathedral unit, KNS Cordel unit and KNS Gurpur unit, along with members of the managing committee, extended valuable support throughout the programme.
The attractive stage decoration was designed by Glanny D'Souza of Bajal unit, adding a special visual appeal to the evening. Technical arrangements were efficiently managed by Christopher Mascarenhas of Bendur unit and Deon Joshwin Pinto of Cascia unit.
A Smooth and Entertaining Evening
The programme was compered by popular MC Roshan Crasta Paldane, who kept the proceedings lively and engaging. Stany Bela introduced the judges, while KNS general secretary Pamela Santos announced the results.
The evening concluded with appreciation and applause for all the participating teams, judges, organisers, volunteers and supporters whose collective efforts contributed to the success of the competition.
