Mangaluru, Jul 4: Serious safety concerns have emerged over the ongoing Bikarnakatte-Savanoor national highway development project, with newly constructed stretches showing cracks and signs of instability, raising fears among commuters and local residents.
Several sections of the highway are reportedly exhibiting cracks soon after construction, while portions of the road, particularly near Kudupu and Ganjimath, are said to be vulnerable to erosion and possible collapse following continuous monsoon rains. Residents have alleged that in some areas, hillsides were cut without adequate scientific measures, increasing the risk of landslides.

At Ganjimath, locals claim that a large depression was filled with soil to construct the road, but no retaining wall or protective structure has been built to prevent the soil from being washed away during heavy rainfall. They fear that continued rains could weaken the embankment and damage the roadway.
Similar concerns have been raised in the Kudupu area, where cracks have appeared on the newly laid road, with sections reportedly showing signs of sinking. The situation has sparked anxiety among motorists who use the highway daily.
Residents have urged the National Highways Authority of India and the concerned contractor to immediately inspect the affected stretches, strengthen vulnerable areas with proper retaining walls, and carry out necessary repairs before the monsoon intensifies. They warned that prompt action is essential to prevent potential accidents and ensure the safety of commuters.
