Udupi, Jul 1: A video showing students travelling while hanging onto the rear ladder of a private bus has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread concern over passenger safety.

The viral video is said to have been recorded on a private bus operating on the Harikhandige–Perdoor route in Udupi district.

The footage shows several students clinging to the ladder at the back of the bus, reportedly due to severe overcrowding inside the vehicle.

The incident has raised serious safety concerns among the public, with many urging the authorities and the transport department to investigate the matter and take appropriate action to prevent such dangerous travel practices in the future.

Thirty-five years ago, I used to travel from Padubidri to Nitte . One time am forced to stand on bus ladder ( Mallika Travel) and travel due to Annual exam . If we miss this bus next bus will be after 2 hrs and we will loose exam . Standing on the bus ladder and risking my life because there was no space inside the bus. It is very sad to see that, even after 35 years, students in the coastal district are still forced to travel in the same dangerous conditions. Despite significant development and progress, this basic public transport issue remains unresolved. Standing on the bus ladder is extremely dangerous. A slight loss of footing—especially when the bus passes over speed humps, potholes, or takes sudden turns—can result in a tragic / fatal accident. Our students should never have to risk their lives just to reach school or college. I sincerely urge the concerned authorities and transport operators to increase the number of buses during peak hours and ensure safe, reliable transportation for all students. Student safety must be a priority, not an afterthought.

The only immediate solution is to remove some seats 💺 say from the rear of the bus. Our children should not be allowed to travel like in the photos. The Rs. 5 lacks given in case of accidental death is peanuts 🥜... Safety must take priority!!

The driver should be booked for endangering kid's lives. He is the one who has authority not to move the bus if it is not safe.

Instead of hanging from a crowded bus door, it seems safer to hang onto a ladder. During my school days, I travelled many times from Kalavar (Pezar) to Katipalla because there were very limited bus services on the Surathkal–Kalavar–Bajpe route. It is unfortunate that students are still forced to travel in such unsafe conditions. The concerned authorities should take this matter seriously and introduce additional bus services during peak hours to prevent overcrowding and ensure the safety of students.

I think there were only 4 buses plying from Bajpe to Surathkal during those days. Students commuting to school and college had hard times then, but now the situation has improved. KSRTC should be permitted to introduce buses on such routes, at least during peak hours. In any case passengers especially students should be strictly prohibited from hanging on footboards or ladders.
