Red alert issued for Coastal Karnataka as heavy rain batters state

Bengaluru, Jul 1: A red alert has been issued for Coastal Karnataka, warning of extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, squally winds, and strong surface winds over the next several days.

According to the weather warning issued on July 1, Coastal Karnataka is expected to experience extremely heavy rain on July 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7, while very heavy rain has been forecast for July 3 and 4. Thunderstorms, lightning, squally weather, and strong surface winds are also likely throughout the seven-day period.

In an advisory shared on Wednesday, it is stated that 30 to 40 kmph winds are likely over the Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts, while gale-force winds of 30 to 40 kmph are expected over the coastal waters adjoining these districts. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

For North Interior Karnataka, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, squally winds, and strong surface winds from July 1 to July 7.

In South Interior Karnataka, heavy rainfall is expected from July 1 to July 4, followed by very heavy rain on July 5, 6, and 7. Thunderstorms, lightning, squally winds, and strong surface winds are also likely across the region during the forecast period.

The state government has advised district administrations, disaster management authorities, and the public to remain vigilant as widespread rainfall is expected to continue across Karnataka over the coming week.
