Mangaluru, Jul 1: A major tragedy was averted after a high compound wall of a private estate collapsed onto a nearby house at Kerebail near Thokkottu in Ullal, completely flattening the structure. The five-member family residing in the house had shifted to a rented accommodation just two weeks ago after sensing the danger.

The house belonging to Kishore, a resident of Kerebail Gudde, was completely destroyed when the massive compound wall of the adjacent private estate came crashing down.

Several years ago, Ahmed Moideen had constructed a sprawling luxury estate on the hilltop at Kerebail Gudde. A tall compound wall had been built around the estate.

During the heavy rains last year, a portion of the estate's compound wall had partially collapsed and leaned towards Kishore's house. Following the incident, Kishore lodged a complaint with officials of the Ullal City Municipal Council.

As a precautionary measure, municipal officials shifted Kishore's family, along with residents of ten neighbouring houses that were under threat from the unstable compound wall, to rented houses.

Following incessant overnight rain on Tuesday, the weakened compound wall finally collapsed, completely demolishing Kishore's house.

Local residents alleged that negligence on the part of the Ullal City Municipal Council authorities was responsible for the incident, claiming that adequate action had not been taken despite earlier complaints and the visible risk posed by the damaged wall.

The structure seems to be rickety, lucky that there was no loss of life in this collapse; residents need to be very careful as there are many such fragile spots in the city where boundary walls have become weak, on the verge of collapse, or houses built on plots susceptible to landslides awaiting a similar tragedy as the monsoon season advances!!

Now the poor one must suffer.Since owner didnt do anything when wall was not sure, and even MMC should have warned him to set it right ,but the poor family had to move away (naturally they were right to move them). Now let the private estate owner look into it .I think coconut tree had done its part to avoid big tragody.Wall was not built properly. In middle they should have given a steady support .Any way thank God no persons were injured or came to death.Wall ca be rebuilt.
