London, Jun 7: England secured a commanding 115-run victory over New Zealand at Lord’s, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series, with pace bowler Gus Atkinson once again proving decisive through a match-winning five-wicket haul.
Set a target of 254 runs, New Zealand began the fourth day in deep trouble at 55 for 5 and failed to mount a serious challenge despite more favorable batting conditions than those seen earlier in the match.

England made an immediate breakthrough when Josh Tongue dismissed Tom Blundell with a superb delivery, pushing the visitors further onto the back foot. Reduced to 58 for 6, New Zealand found hope through Glenn Phillips, who produced a spirited innings of 78—the highest individual score of the match.
Phillips combined effectively with Devon Conway, adding 53 runs for the seventh wicket. Conway contributed a composed 41 before England captain Ben Stokes ended the partnership, removing the left-hander at a crucial stage.
With New Zealand’s resistance weakening, Atkinson took charge. The fast bowler dismissed Nathan Smith behind the stumps, induced Kyle Jamieson to offer a simple catch at short midwicket, and then clean-bowled Matt Henry to complete another memorable five-wicket performance. Phillips remained unbeaten as New Zealand were eventually dismissed for 138.
Earlier in the contest, New Zealand had enjoyed the upper hand after bowling England out for just 140 in the first innings, with Kyle Jamieson leading the attack with a five-wicket haul.
England responded emphatically by restricting New Zealand to 113, earning a valuable first-innings advantage of 27 runs. Returning pacer Ollie Robinson played a starring role with five wickets, exposing the visitors’ batting frailties with disciplined bowling.
The home side then strengthened its grip on the match in the second innings, posting 226 runs. Debutant Emilio Gay impressed with a fluent 57, helping England set a challenging target that ultimately proved beyond New Zealand’s reach.
The teams will next meet in the second Test at The Oval, beginning June 17, as England look to seal the series and New Zealand seek a comeback.
Brief Scores: England 140 & 226 (Emilio Gay 57; Nathan Smith 6/70) defeated New Zealand 113 & 138 (Glenn Phillips 78*; Gus Atkinson 5/30) by 115 runs.
