Budapest, May 31: Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League crown after defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a penalty shootout in the final in Budapest on Saturday night.

The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with Arsenal taking an early lead through Kai Havertz in the sixth minute.

PSG fought back in the second half as Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé converted a penalty in the 65th minute to level the scores and force extra time.

With neither side able to find a winner after 120 minutes, the contest was decided through penalties. Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes missed the decisive spot-kick, allowing PSG to seal a 4-3 shootout victory and lift the trophy.

The triumph made PSG only the second club in the modern era to retain the Champions League title after Real Madrid.

PSG manager Luis Enrique also entered an elite group of coaches to win the European Cup or UEFA Champions League on at least three occasions.

The UEFA Champions League is Europe's premier club football competition, featuring leading teams from domestic leagues across the continent.
