BJP camp in AC hall draws criticism amid Modi’s austerity appeal

Nanded, May 17: Questions have been raised over the alleged contradiction between Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation and a recent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) training camp organised in Nanded in an air-conditioned hall with elaborate arrangements for party workers.

The two-day Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Mahanagar Prashikshan Abhiyan was organised by the city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Senior leaders including MP Ashok Chavan, former Union minister Bhagwat Karad and BJP Mahila Morcha state president Chitra Wagh attended the event.

The programme was reportedly held in a costly air-conditioned venue, while party workers were served an elaborate meal arrangement, drawing criticism amid the Prime Minister’s recent call for austerity and reduced fuel consumption.

Prime Minister Modi had recently appealed to citizens to cut down unnecessary fuel and edible oil consumption and use resources only when essential in view of global economic uncertainties.

Critics alleged that while people across the country were responding to the Prime Minister’s appeal, the arrangements at the BJP training camp appeared to contradict the message of conservation.

When asked about the issue, Chitra Wagh reportedly avoided commenting directly and said the BJP city president would be better placed to answer questions regarding the arrangements.

The two-day residential training programme was inaugurated in the presence of several BJP leaders, including city president Amarnath Rajurkar, former guardian minister DP Sawant, BJP state vice-president Chaitanyabapu Deshmukh, Mayor Kavita Mule and senior leader Balasaheb Pande.
