Paris, Apr 21: Reigning French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has indicated he could miss defending his French Open title as he focuses on recovering from a “serious” wrist injury.

The 22-year-old Spaniard pulled out of the Barcelona clay-court tournament last week after experiencing discomfort, later revealing that the injury was more severe than initially expected. He subsequently withdrew from the Madrid Open, raising concerns about his participation in the Grand Slam event in Paris, scheduled to begin on May 18.

Speaking at an award ceremony on Monday, Alcaraz said he would prioritise long-term fitness over a rushed return.

“I’d rather come back a little later but in great shape than return early and not be fully fit,” he said, adding that pushing himself prematurely could impact his career in the long run.

“God willing, I have many years ahead in my career, and forcing myself at this stage could harm me in future tournaments,” he said, stressing the importance of proper recovery.

Alcaraz, currently ranked world No. 2, recently lost his top spot following a defeat to Jannik Sinner in the Monte Carlo Masters final earlier this month.

Before the setback, the Spaniard had been in strong form on clay, winning 17 consecutive matches, including title victories in Rome and at Roland Garros last season.

With his participation now uncertain, fans and organisers await further updates on his recovery ahead of the prestigious tournament.
