Monte Carlo, Apr 14: Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev has been fined €6,000 (about $7,000) for unsportsmanlike conduct after smashing his racket repeatedly during a one-sided defeat at the Monte Carlo Masters last week, the ATP Tour confirmed.

Medvedev, currently ranked 10th, received a code violation from the chair umpire during his 6-0, 6-0 loss to Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, after visibly losing his temper early in the second set.

The incident escalated when Medvedev smashed his racket multiple times on court before throwing it toward a courtside tarp and continuing to destroy it until it was unusable, prompting sarcastic applause from spectators.

The fine is relatively modest compared to previous penalties imposed on the Russian star, who has been fined tens of thousands of dollars in earlier Grand Slam incidents, including the Australian Open and the US Open.

Medvedev, a US Open champion in 2021, exited the match in just 49 minutes after struggling throughout the contest.
