Panaji, Apr 13: At a recent public meeting, residents voiced strong opposition to the installation of smart electricity meters, citing concerns over health, privacy, and potential cost implications.
Participants alleged that the meters use 5G-enabled SIM technology and could emit high levels of radiation, which they fear may pose risks to both human health and the environment. They also claimed that similar resistance to smart meter deployment has been reported in several other states.

During the gathering, citizens were encouraged to formally submit written objections to the electricity department, clearly stating that smart meters should not be installed in their homes without prior consent.
Residents also called for the issue to be taken up at the grassroots level, urging gram sabhas to pass resolutions opposing mandatory installations. In addition, speakers stressed the need to raise public awareness about the possibility of higher electricity bills under the new metering system.
The meeting concluded with a collective appeal for greater transparency, informed decision-making, and public participation before implementing the smart meter rollout.
