Augusta, Apr 10: Golf legend Gary Player has expressed sympathy for Tiger Woods over his long battle with injuries and pain, while cautioning that the 15-time major champion should avoid driving while on medication.
Woods was arrested on March 27 on suspicion of driving under the influence after his vehicle crashed in a residential area in Florida. Authorities later said he was impaired, and painkiller pills were reportedly found in his possession.

Speaking on the sidelines of the The Masters, Player said he does not blame Woods for taking medication given the extent of his injuries and chronic pain. However, he stressed that driving under such conditions could be dangerous.
“If any of us had the kind of pain he has endured, we would understand,” Player said, adding that while using medication for relief and sleep is understandable, it is not safe to be behind the wheel in such a state.
Player, who recently participated in the ceremonial tee-off at Augusta, said he himself has stopped driving, opting instead for a chauffeur despite maintaining good reflexes.
Woods, a five-time Masters champion, recently announced he would miss the tournament for the second consecutive year to focus on recovery and treatment at a facility outside the United States.
The golfer has undergone multiple surgeries over the past decade, including knee and back procedures, as well as treatment following a serious car crash in 2021 that caused severe injuries to his leg and ankle.
Fellow golfer Jason Day also voiced support for Woods, describing him as an inspiration while noting that driving under such circumstances could put others at risk.
“He’s human and going through struggles,” Day said, expressing hope that Woods would recover and return stronger.
Player concluded by expressing concern for Woods’ well-being, calling him a vital figure in the sport and hoping he overcomes his challenges soon.
