Goa cuts fitness certificate fees for older transport vehicles

Panaji, Apr 2: The Goa government has reduced the fees for grant and renewal of fitness certificates for older transport vehicles, aiming to ease the financial burden on vehicle owners while maintaining road safety standards.

The decision, notified by the Directorate of Transport under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, applies to heavy goods and passenger vehicles that are over 13 years old.

As per the revised structure, vehicles aged between 13 and 15 years will be charged Rs 2,000, those between 15 and 20 years Rs 5,000, and vehicles above 20 years Rs 10,000 for fitness certification.

Officials said the revision seeks to strike a balance between affordability for transport operators and strict enforcement of safety norms. Fitness certification remains mandatory to ensure that ageing vehicles meet prescribed roadworthiness and emission standards before being allowed to operate.

The revised fee structure will come into effect upon its publication in the Official Gazette.
