Silent threat in the mouth: Rising burden of oral cancer in India

New Delhi, Apr 2: Oral cancer is emerging as a major public health concern in India, with a significant number of cases being diagnosed at advanced stages. Oral Cancer often develops silently, with early symptoms going unnoticed or ignored, leading to delayed treatment and poorer outcomes.

Health experts warn that lifestyle habits, particularly tobacco chewing and smoking, continue to be the biggest drivers of the disease. The widespread use of gutka, paan, and other smokeless tobacco products has placed India among the countries with the highest oral cancer burden globally.

Doctors emphasise that the disease typically begins with small, painless lesions or patches inside the mouth, which many people dismiss as minor ulcers. Over time, these can progress into malignant growths affecting the tongue, cheeks, gums, or throat.

Another growing concern is the role of Human papillomavirus (HPV), which has been increasingly linked to cancers of the oropharyngeal region, particularly among younger individuals with no history of tobacco use.

Medical professionals stress that awareness and early screening are crucial in combating the disease. Regular oral check-ups, especially for individuals with high-risk habits, can help detect abnormalities at an early and treatable stage.

Public health campaigns are now focusing on discouraging tobacco use, promoting healthy lifestyles, and encouraging people to seek medical attention for any persistent oral symptoms lasting more than two weeks.

With timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, oral cancer is largely preventable and manageable. However, neglect and lack of awareness continue to pose significant challenges in reducing its impact across the country.
