Udupi, Mar 28: Five persons were arrested in connection with two related incidents reported from Karkala and Shirva on March 27, involving an alleged attempt to run over police personnel, obstruction of duty, and suspected involvement in illegal cricket betting activities.
According to police reports, at around 2.30 pm, police sub-inspector Prasanna M S of Karkala Town police station, along with his staff, was on duty near Hanchikatte Honda showroom in Kasaba village of Karkala taluk.
When they signalled a black Toyota Fortuner car bearing registration number KA15Z0007, coming from Banglegudde Circle, to stop, the occupants—identified as Sudarshan, Kartavy Shetty, Arun Srikant, and Shashikant — allegedly attempted to mow down police personnel with the vehicle, with intent to kill.

The act also amounted to obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their duty. A case was registered at Karkala Town police station.
In a separate but connected incident at Shirva at around 3.10 pm the same day, PSI Manjunath Marabada of Shirva police station was on duty near Padu area when he noticed the same suspicious Fortuner car approaching from Belman towards Shirva.
When signalled to stop, the driver initially slowed down but suddenly pushed the complainant from the window and attempted to flee, thereby obstructing official duty.
Alert police personnel in Shirva town intercepted and stopped the vehicle. Upon inquiry, the occupants identified themselves as Sudarshan, Kartavy Shetty, and Arun.
Further investigation revealed that the accused, along with associates Srikant, Shashikant, Tejas from Hebri, and Prajwal from Byndoor, were allegedly involved in cheating people by luring them to invest money in cricket betting and conducting gambling activities.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered at Shirva police station.
The arrested accused were identified as Sudarshan Shetty (29), a resident of Nada village, Kundapur; Kartavy Shetty (27), a resident of Herur village, Kundapur; Arun Shetty (29), a resident of Moodur village, Byndoor taluk; Tejas (28), a resident of Belanje village, Hebri; and Prajwal Shetty (29), a resident of Shirur village, Byndoor.
All the accused have been taken into custody and will be produced before the court.
