London/Mangaluru, Mar 27: The Konkani and Tulu film industries are in mourning following the passing of esteemed actor, producer, and philanthropist Ron Rodrigues, who breathed his last in London on Thursday night at the age of 67. Rodrigues had been undergoing treatment for throat cancer over the past few months. A native of Bantwal and a highly successful businessman in London, he was a multifaceted personality who bridged the gap between the Mangalurean diaspora and his roots through cinema and charity.
Rodrigues’ most recent performance as 'Jemma' in the Konkani feature film ‘Bapache Putache Navim’, released in November 2025, earned him widespread acclaim, with his portrayal deeply moving audiences across the globe. Despite his illness, he remained an active participant in the film’s post-production throughout late 2024.
Rodrigues’ journey in the film industry spanned over three decades, beginning with the 1992 Hindi film ‘Jab Dil Hai Toot Gaya’. In recent years, he became a powerhouse in regional cinema, notably winning the Best Supporting Actor award at the first-ever Global Konkani Cine Awards for his performance in ‘Ek Aslyar Ek Na’.
His extensive filmography and production credits include ‘Planning Devachem’, ‘Appe Teacher’, ‘Pammanne The Great’, ‘Bhojaraj MBBS’, and the upcoming Kannada film ‘Mumbai to Bhatkal’. His final Hindi film, ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’, is currently scheduled for release in June 2026. Beyond the big screen, he was a vital supporter of the television industry as the producer and actor of the popular Konkani serial ‘Godfather’ on Daijiworld TV, and he was a frequent guest on the comedy show ‘Private Challenge’ alongside Walter Nandalike and Aravind Bolar.
Beyond the silver screen, Rodrigues was a pioneer for the Mangalurean community in the UK, serving as a foundational leader for several associations and maintaining strong ties with the British government. His philanthropic heart was best evidenced by his 2021 contribution of Rs 25 lac to construct five houses for underprivileged families in Balpa Village, Bantwal, under the leadership of former MP Nalin Kumar Kateel. He remained a consistent patron of Konkani cultural events and projects across Mangaluru, Goa, and London. The industry remembers him not just as a talented artiste and successful producer under his banner, R Films International, but as a man of immense generosity and community spirit.
