Karkala, Mar 25: A well-known amateur snake rescuer and social activist was killed on the spot after a tipper truck collided with his scooter at Mulluru near Mala Ghat on Tuesday, March 24.
The deceased has been identified as Naveen (45), a resident of Bajagoli. A welder by profession, Naveen was widely recognized for his selfless service in capturing venomous snakes from residential areas and safely releasing them into the Kudremukh forest region. The accident reportedly occurred while he was on his way to release a snake he had rescued earlier that morning in Mudaru.

The tipper truck was heading towards Mala from the S K Border when it crashed into the scooter. Due to the impact of the collision, Naveen died instantly. A pillion rider who was traveling with him sustained injuries and has been shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Naveen was an active member of social organizations such as the Swachh Brigade of Bajagoli and the Shaurya disaster management unit. Known for his philanthropic nature, he was a respected figure in his community. He hailed from a humble background and is survived by his wife and two sons, who are studying in the eighth and fifth grades.
Karkala rural police visited the spot and have registered a case. Local residents have expressed deep outrage over the increasing number of accidents involving tipper trucks in the district. They pointed out that despite police intervention, the reckless speed of heavy vehicles remains unchecked.
Recent incidents, including a collision with a bus in Kundapur and a fatal accident involving a youth from Hiriadka on Palli Road last week, have heightened safety concerns. Citizens have now urged the police department to take stringent action against heavy vehicles operating above speed limits to prevent further loss of life.
