Chennai, Mar 13: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League could mark the last time legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni appears in the yellow jersey of the Chennai Super Kings.

Speaking to JioHotstar, Pathan said Dhoni’s presence is integral to the identity of CSK and that it is hard to imagine both the franchise and the IPL without him.

“CSK is incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be the last time we see him in the yellow jersey, and it’s tough to imagine CSK and the IPL without him,” Pathan said. He added that even if Dhoni does not play every match, his leadership and experience will remain crucial in the dressing room.

Pathan also highlighted the growing leadership role of CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. According to him, the franchise is working on grooming a few players for the future, and Dhoni’s mentorship will be key during this transition period.

He further suggested that the team management may carefully manage Dhoni’s workload throughout the season. Pathan also expressed hope that the franchise could give the veteran a memorable send-off by winning a sixth IPL title.

Dhoni remains one of the most influential figures in CSK’s history, having led the team to five IPL titles during his captaincy. However, the franchise endured a difficult campaign in the previous season, finishing at the bottom of the table with just four wins in 14 matches.

Despite advancing in age, Dhoni continues to be among the most accomplished batters in IPL history. Across 278 matches and 242 innings, he has scored 5,439 runs at an average of 38.80 with a strike rate of 137.45, including 24 half-centuries and a highest score of 84 not out.
