Udupi, Mar 12: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna urged the state government during the Assembly session to sanction a government medical college for Udupi district.
MLA Yashpal Suvarna stated that the state government’s ambitious plan of establishing one government medical college in every district is essential to provide medical education and better healthcare services to the people. Many districts in the state already have government medical colleges, and in the previous budget, the government had announced the establishment of a new government medical college in the neighboring Dakshina Kannada district.

At present, Udupi district requires a government medical education institution, which has been a long-standing dream of the people of the district for several decades. Establishing a medical college in the district would significantly strengthen the healthcare sector. It would also enable the public to access quality medical services nearby while providing better opportunities for students to pursue medical education.
Yashpal Suvarna further informed that government land has already been identified at Uppoor village in Brahmavar taluk for the construction of the medical college. A total of 30.80 acres has already been reserved for this purpose. The location is considered highly suitable for constructing a medical college with the required infrastructure.
Yashpal Suvarna requested the state government to give special priority to this matter, announce the establishment of a government medical college in Udupi district, grant administrative approval at the earliest, and allocate the necessary funds.
Responding to the MLA’s question, medical education minister Sharan Prakash Patil assured that the government is committed to establishing a government medical college in every district and said that the proposal for a government medical college in Udupi district will be considered on priority in the coming days.
