Pune, Mar 12: A complaint has been filed with the Pune Police seeking registration of an FIR against Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya for allegedly disrespecting the national flag during celebrations after India’s victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
A police officer at the Shivajinagar Police Station, Pune confirmed on Wednesday that an application had been submitted by advocate Wajid Khan. However, officials did not elaborate on further action.

In his complaint, Khan alleged that Pandya wrapped the Indian tricolour around his body and engaged in inappropriate behaviour on the ground during celebrations following India’s win against New Zealand national cricket team at a stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
“The act constitutes an offence under relevant law, and legal action should be taken. It is the duty of every citizen to respect the dignity of the national flag,” the complaint stated.
Meanwhile, Pandya recently described winning his second successive T20 World Cup title as the fulfilment of a personal promise, saying the latest triumph marked only the beginning of the team’s dominance.
The 32-year-old all-rounder delivered strong performances during the tournament, scoring two half-centuries — including a 52 off 28 balls against Namibia national cricket team — and finishing with nine wickets.
Reflecting on his journey, Pandya said the team’s success followed a challenging period in his personal life ahead of the 2024 tournament. “Before the 2024 World Cup started, I had made up my mind that I would come back strongly and help the team win,” he said.
India’s victory in Ahmedabad made them the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title and also win the tournament three times since their triumph in the inaugural edition in 2007. Pandya was also named in the ICC’s Team of the Tournament for the 2026 edition.
