Belagavi, Mar 8: Kiran Sannappa Kamate (29), a youth from Hattaravat village in Chikkodi taluk of Belagavi district, has secured 53rd rank in the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), emerging as the top-ranked candidate from Karnataka. His achievement has inspired aspirants across rural north Karnataka.

In this year’s examination, a total of 22 candidates from the state cleared the exam.

Currently serving as a junior engineer in the Public Works Department (PWD) headquarters in Bengaluru, Kamate balanced his demanding government job with rigorous preparation for one of India’s toughest examinations. A civil engineering graduate from Gogte Institute of Technology, he succeeded on his sixth attempt, having cleared the preliminary stage five times earlier but falling short in the mains examination.

Kamate hails from a well-educated family. His father, Sannappa Kamate, is the principal of Hira Sugar Engineering College, his mother Rukkini is a homemaker, and his sister Keerthi is an architect in Bengaluru. He completed his early schooling at a Marathi primary school in Ambajogai, Maharashtra; Classes 3 to 8 at MR Sakhare English Medium School; Classes 9 and 10 at KLE English Medium School, Gadag; and pre-university education at GI Bagewadi College.

Sharing his experience with the media, Kamate said, “I joined my job in 2023. While working, I studied for about five hours a day. I expected to secure a rank within the top 250, but getting the 53rd rank has brought immense happiness. I thank my father, mother and wife. This success has been possible because of their support.”

He also highlighted the crucial role of his wife Lochana, adding, “She stood by me like a backbone, encouraging me and helping me balance work and studies.” Responding to his success, Lochana said, “My husband is extremely hardworking. He worked day and night preparing for UPSC while giving time to both studies and family. Achieving the first rank in Karnataka has brought us immense joy.”

Kamate’s success has created a celebratory atmosphere in Hattaravat village, with friends, relatives and villagers congratulating him. He conveyed a message of encouragement to young aspirants: “There is immense talent among the youth of north Karnataka. With determination and hard work, anyone can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.”

Kamate’s accomplishment, coming from a rural background and while serving in government service, stands as a significant inspiration for young aspirants across Karnataka.
