Hubballi, Feb 28: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has termed Jammu and Kashmir’s first-ever Ranji Trophy title as a “watershed moment” that could redefine cricketing aspirations in the region.
Jammu and Kashmir clinched the championship after defeating Karnataka cricket team on the basis of a commanding first-innings lead in a drawn final at the Hubballi Cricket Ground.
The visitors posted a formidable 584 in their first innings, anchored by a century from Shubham Pundir and vital middle-order contributions. They then bowled Karnataka out for 293, with Auqib Nabi Dar claiming a five-wicket haul. In the second innings, centuries by Qamran Iqbal and Sahil Lotra shut the door on the eight-time champions, sealing a historic victory.
Saikia described the achievement as transformative. “Defeating a powerhouse like Karnataka in their own backyard is extraordinary. This win will inspire smaller teams and motivate youngsters in Jammu and Kashmir to pursue cricket seriously. It is a massive accomplishment, and the BCCI’s sustained efforts have played a key role,” he said.
He credited structural reforms initiated under former BCCI secretary and current ICC Chairman Jay Shah. Following a High Court directive, the BCCI formed a sub-committee to oversee cricket administration in Jammu and Kashmir. Saikia noted that Shah, Brigadier Anil Gupta, and other members invested significant effort in rebuilding systems and infrastructure, laying the groundwork for the team’s rise.
Highlighting challenges unique to the region, Saikia pointed to infrastructural gaps and harsh winter conditions that restrict play when most of the country’s cricket season is underway. He acknowledged the role of administrators such as Mithun Manhas and the BCCI in arranging alternate training venues to ensure continuity in player development.
“Restarting cricketing structures after disruptions demands patience and commitment. The coaches, support staff, and players demonstrated remarkable dedication. Their perseverance has culminated in this historic milestone,” Saikia added.
