Lisbon, Feb 18: Vinicius Junior scored the decisive goal as Real Madrid secured a 1-0 victory over Benfica in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off, in a match overshadowed by allegations of racism.
The Brazilian forward’s second-half strike proved the difference on a tense night that also saw a lengthy delay after Vinicius reported an alleged racist remark from Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni. The game was paused for around 10 minutes under the racism protocol before play resumed, with Vinicius returning to the pitch.

Benfica began brightly, testing Madrid’s defence early. Thibaut Courtois was called into action several times, producing crucial saves to keep the hosts at bay.
Madrid’s best first-half opportunities came from lively wing play by Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose inviting deliveries caused problems. Kylian Mbappe came closest before the break, striking the crossbar from close range.
Vinicius turned the tide after the interval. Cutting inside from the left, he curled a superb effort into the top corner to give Los Blancos the lead.
Moments later, the controversy unfolded as Vinicius informed the referee of an alleged racist comment. He briefly sat on the bench, appearing unwilling to continue, before returning once the protocol was completed.
Madrid continued to threaten on the counter, with Vinicius twice denied by the Benfica goalkeeper. Tensions escalated further as Benfica manager Jose Mourinho was sent off during the closing stages.
Despite late pressure from the hosts, Real Madrid held firm to take a narrow but valuable advantage into the return leg.
Thibaut Courtois (7/10): Produced important saves early on as Madrid weathered Benfica’s strong start.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (7/10): Delivered dangerous crosses in the first half and looked Madrid’s main creative outlet from wide areas.
Antonio Rudiger (7/10): Occasionally loose in possession but solid in individual duels.
Dean Huijsen (8/10): Commanding at the back, completed the most passes in the match and impressed aerially.
Alvaro Carreras (6/10): A mixed performance against his former club, beaten at times on the dribble but showed resilience.
