Mangaluru: Inter-district bag thief nabbed; gold worth Rs 6.47 lac seized

Mangaluru, Jan 30: The Mangaluru city police have seized 46.28 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 6,47,920 and Rs 5,000 in cash from an inter-district thief involved in multiple bag theft cases at bus stands. The accused was apprehended by the Barke police in connection with 11 bag theft cases.

The arrested is identified as Mohammed Imran N M (44), a resident of Dasavala Road, Gaffar Building, Thyagaraj Colony, Madikeri, Kodagu district.

A case was registered at Barke police station (Crime No. 10/2026 under Section 303(2), BNS-2023) following an incident on January 23, around 7.00 pm, at the B C Road KSRTC bus stand, Bejai. Two women and a senior citizen, who were seated on a bus bound for Bengaluru, had kept a trolley bag containing about 45 grams of gold ornaments and Rs 20,000 in cash. Unknown thieves allegedly stole the bag during this time.

To trace the accused, a special team was formed under the guidance of the assistant commissioner of police, central sub-division. Under the supervision of the investigating officer Vinayak Toragal, PSI, along with staff members Sujan, Vasudeva, Ravi Lamani, Siddu, Harish, Nitish, and Galib, the team apprehended Mohammed Imran, near the Mangaluru Central railway station on January 28.

During the operation, police recovered gold ornaments weighing 46.28 grams valued at Rs 6,47,920, along with Rs 5,000 in cash, from the accused. He was produced before the competent court on January 29, following which the court remanded him to judicial custody.

Police stated that the accused is a habitual offender who targets bags containing valuables at bus stands. A total of 11 cases have been registered against him. These include bag theft cases at Dudda police station (1), Komanur police station (1), Hassan Badavane police station (1), Hassan City police station (1), Channarayapatna City police station (1), and Mysuru Devaraj Nagar police station (1). In addition, house theft cases have been registered against him at Shantigrama police station, Hassan district (1), Hassan Badavane police station (2), and Dudda police station, Hassan district (1).

Further, the accused had obtained bail in a house theft case in Hassan district but failed to appear before the court for hearings, following which the court had also issued a warrant against him.
