Dubai, Jan 14: The United Arab Emirates has reached a historic milestone by securing fifth position in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, marking a major leap in global passport strength and underscoring decades of sustained diplomatic efforts and international engagement.
With this rise, the UAE passport has overtaken traditionally strong travel documents from countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the United States. It now ranks as the most powerful passport in the Middle East, offering Emirati citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 184 destinations worldwide.

Singapore continues to hold the top position, providing access to 192 destinations, but the UAE has significantly narrowed the gap, reflecting its growing global influence.
Over the past two decades, the UAE has recorded the most dramatic long-term rise of any country on the Henley Passport Index, climbing an unprecedented 57 places since 2006. During this period, Emirati nationals gained access to 149 additional destinations — the largest increase recorded in the index’s 20-year history.
Commenting on the achievement, Dr Christian H Kaelin, chairman of Henley & Partners and creator of the index, described the UAE’s ascent as “without parallel”. He said the country’s long-term vision, political stability and strategic diplomacy have translated directly into tangible mobility benefits for citizens, while also strengthening its global soft power.
The expansion of the UAE passport’s reach highlights the nation’s emergence as a key global player in fostering constructive international relationships. Enhanced mobility has opened new avenues for tourism, trade and business, placing the UAE among the world’s most travel-friendly and internationally connected nations.
