Panaji, Jan 13: The ICMR–National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH), Ahmedabad, has been entrusted with carrying out a detailed scientific assessment of coal dust exposure and its health impact on workers and residents living in and around the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT).
The study will focus primarily on respiratory ailments and the presence of heavy metals among those potentially affected by coal handling operations at the port. The findings are expected to provide crucial data on the extent of exposure and related health risks.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, responding to concerns over coal handling at MPT, said that the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has not granted permission to South West Port Limited (SWPL) or the Adani Group to handle coal beyond the limits approved in 2012. He stressed that environmental regulations are being strictly enforced to safeguard public health and the environment.
The Chief Minister added that the government is closely monitoring port operations and ensuring compliance with all prescribed norms. “There is no permission for handling coal beyond the approved limits, and strict action will be taken in case of violations,” he said.
The assessment by the ICMR institute is expected to help the state government take informed decisions regarding future coal handling activities, environmental safeguards and health protection measures for port workers and nearby residents.
