Margao, Dec 27: The Margao western bypass, which has significantly eased traffic congestion in the commercial capital since its commissioning a year ago, is now facing a growing problem of waste dumping along its 11-km stretch.
The Navelim–Benaulim stretch of the bypass has reportedly emerged as a favoured dumping ground, with garbage strewn along the roadside. The issue drew sharp concern on Friday when Benaulim-based social activist Santan Pereira made an impassioned appeal to the authorities, including the South Goa district Collector, seeking immediate intervention to curb the menace.

Pereira warned that a “mini-Sonsodo” was taking shape along the stretch, alleging that unscrupulous elements were dumping mixed waste, including construction debris, in blatant violation of rules. “Today, I call the waste dumping site a mini-Sonsodo. The day is not too far away when it might take the shape of Sonsodo,” he cautioned.
He further pointed out that with most national highway traffic now using the western bypass, tourists and visitors could carry back bitter memories. “They will question why the government has not put in place a proper system to collect waste from the roadside,” he said.
Echoing similar concerns, a woman from Navelim suggested that the authorities should consider installing CCTV surveillance cameras along the bypass to deter those involved in illegal dumping.
