Hyderabad, Dec 23: Senior Telugu actor Sivaji has landed in controversy following remarks he made on women’s dressing sense during the pre-release event of the upcoming film Dhandora, held on Monday evening. His comments, perceived by many as distasteful and regressive, have triggered widespread criticism on social media.
During his address, Sivaji praised the film’s team and anchor Sravanthi Chokkarapu for wearing a saree, calling her attire “very good”. He went on to urge female actors to avoid revealing outfits and opt for sarees or fully covered dresses, stating that “beauty lies in complete attire, not in displaying physical assets.”

Singer Chinmayi Sripada strongly condemned Sivaji’s remarks, accusing him of using derogatory language and offering unsolicited advice in a professional space. Sharing a video clip of his speech, Chinmayi alleged that the actor used slurs against women and said his comments reflected entitlement and hypocrisy, noting that Sivaji himself wears modern clothing.
“It is unbelievable how women are treated here,” Chinmayi wrote, adding that such statements reinforce harmful attitudes while policing women’s choices.
In his speech, Sivaji suggested that while people may not openly object to revealing outfits in the name of freedom, they may internally disapprove. He also compared women to nature and motherhood, saying they deserve respect when they are “beautiful,” remarks that further fuelled criticism online.
The actor cited legendary actresses such as Savitri, Soundarya, and Rashmika Mandanna as examples of grace through attire, and said glamour should have limits. Acknowledging that his views might attract backlash, Sivaji maintained that freedom should be exercised with restraint and claimed that women are respected based on conduct.
The remarks have divided opinion within the Telugu film fraternity and among netizens, with some supporting Sivaji’s views on tradition, while many others emphasised personal choice, freedom of expression, and the need for respectful discourse. The debate has once again spotlighted ongoing conversations around women’s autonomy and representation in the film industry.
