Kapil Sharma returns to the big screen: Director Goswami promises a clean, classic comedy comeback

Mumbai, Dec 11: Comedian-actor Kapil Sharma, who made a memorable Bollywood debut with Abbas–Mustan’s comedy Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, is all set to return to the big screen with the film’s much-awaited sequel. The family entertainer, directed by Anukalp Goswami and backed once again by Abbas–Mustan, is scheduled for release on December 12.

The original film, which featured Sharma juggling romances with three leading ladies, emerged as a surprise hit in theatres and later became a beloved favourite on television. Now, nearly a decade later, the team is ready to recreate the magic for audiences seeking clean, feel-good comedy.

In an exclusive chat, director Anukalp Goswami — the creative force behind The Kapil Sharma Show since 2016 — opened up about his long association with Sharma and the meticulous art behind creating clean, family-friendly humour.

Goswami described Kapil’s comedic intuition as “extraordinary,” praising his ability to instinctively understand how a joke will land.

“When we do live shows, it’s 200% writing — half on paper, half from Kapil when we improvise together,” he shared.

But the director emphasised that the film required discipline and character consistency. “Even when he improvises on set, he knows exactly how far he can go without breaking the character. That’s where his mastery lies.”

Goswami lamented the growing trend of below-the-belt jokes in modern comedy. “These days many feel they can do anything in the name of comedy. But true humour is about being lovable — like Chaplin, Mr. Bean, or Johnny Lever. There’s always a message,” he said.

He stressed the need for clean, family entertainers, something Kapil has consistently championed. “In India, going to the theatre is a family outing. That culture must not be lost.”

The director also highlighted how heightened sensitivity among audiences has made it difficult to create genuine humour.
“Our tolerance levels have gone down. This makes comedy a risky space.”

Anukalp Goswami fondly recalled working with the legendary actor Asrani, who also appears in the sequel. “I grew up mimicking him. While narrating a scene, I slipped into his style by mistake,” he said with a smile. “When he performed on camera, it was something else — pure brilliance. He even blessed us for having him in the film. It meant the world.”

As Kapil Sharma returns to the big screen, expectations are high for a wholesome entertainer that revives the charm of classic Bollywood comedy — clean, heart-warming, and made for audiences of all ages.
