Barmy army faces awkward moment as ‘Ashes Winning Party’ ad stirs online buzz

Sydney, Dec 8: The Barmy Army has found itself in an embarrassing spot after its official website continued to promote an “Ashes winning party” in Sydney—even as England trails 0-2 in the ongoing Ashes series and stares at another heavy defeat.

With Australia just one win away from sealing the series, the listing has triggered widespread chatter online, with fans wondering whether the celebration plans might turn into a major humiliation for the famed English supporters’ group.

England’s losses in Perth and Brisbane have pushed Ben Stokes’ men to the brink of yet another unsuccessful Ashes tour. Unless they produce a dramatic turnaround in the third Test at Adelaide, the contest could be effectively decided well before the scheduled party date.

Despite the grim scenario, the Barmy Army website still advertises the January 8 “Ashes winning party” at Cargo Bar, Darling Harbour—featuring Stokes bringing the urn, with Joe Root and head coach Brendon McCullum among the star attractions.

The event promises a quirky line-up, including a professional photo-op with the Ashes urn, David Warner hosting a “Whack a Warner” arcade machine, a signed Joe Root surfboard giveaway, Mark Wood performing his popular “Shake it up Woody” number, Baz McCullum teaming up with Finchy on the trumpet, commentary karaoke judged by David “Bumble” Lloyd, and a dance session with Graeme Swann.

Fans and cricket experts have been vocal about England’s poor show. Former pacer Stuart Broad—also listed as part of the event if England somehow pull off a miracle—criticised the lack of match practice leading into the series.

“Nothing prepares you better than playing a proper match,” Broad told Channel 7. “In nets, there are no repercussions. It’s difficult to get up to Ashes level without real match intensity.”

As the cricketing world watches closely, the Barmy Army may soon have to decide whether to rewrite its party plans—or brace for a wave of online mockery if England’s fortunes don’t change swiftly.
