New Zealand, Dec 4: New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra once again proved why he is among the most exciting talents in world cricket, making batting look effortless as he hammered a brilliant 176 on Day 3 of the first Test against the West Indies on Thursday.
Ravindra stitched a massive 279-run stand for the third wicket with skipper Tom Latham, who returned to form with a superb 145. Their partnership helped New Zealand tighten their grip on the match, extending the lead to a formidable 481 runs. The hosts closed the day at a commanding 417 for 4, after taking a healthy 64-run lead in the first innings.

Ravindra’s innings was packed with flair and authority — 27 boundaries and a six highlighting his dominance. His fourth Test hundred, and second in consecutive matches, came off just 108 balls as he opened up scoring opportunities across the ground with his precise timing and powerful strokeplay.
Captain Latham, who had endured a century drought for over three years, showed immense patience to bring up his ton from 179 deliveries. The relief was evident as he celebrated the milestone with rare emotion, acknowledging the significance of the knock.
“Rachin played fantastically well,” Latham said after play. “It was a great day for batting and a great position we’re in now. He’s pretty high-octane for a guy who’s got every shot in the book. The way he played was fantastic.”
With Will Young unbeaten on 20 and Michael Bracewell on 6 at stumps, New Zealand are expected to declare overnight or early on Day 4 as they push for a win.
Ravindra’s stunning range — especially his immaculate pull shot — left the West Indies bowlers with few answers, setting New Zealand up for a strong finish in the opening Test.
