New Delhi, Dec 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Opposition while addressing the media at Parliament House ahead of the Winter Session, accusing them of turning Parliament into a “warm-up arena” for elections or a space to vent frustration after defeat. He said he was willing to offer them tips to bring positivity into politics and urged them to fulfil their responsibility as an effective Opposition.
Calling the Winter Session an important opportunity to accelerate India’s development, Modi said, “This session is not just a ritual. Efforts are underway to speed up the nation’s progress, and this session will energise those efforts. India has lived democracy, and the voter turnout in the recent Bihar elections reflects its strength. The increasing participation of mothers and sisters creates new hope and confidence.”

Taking a dig at the Opposition over its performance in the Bihar polls, the Prime Minister said many leaders still appear “unsettled” and must come out of the “depression of defeat.” He urged them to set aside differences, avoid repeat disruptions like the monsoon session, and help Parliament pass meaningful laws. “This should not become a battleground for frustration after defeat or arrogance after victory,” he said.
Modi added that Parliament should focus on constructive and result-oriented debate, not theatrics. “There are many places to do drama and sloganeering. Parliament is a place for delivery. Negativity might sometimes help in politics, but here we must focus on nation-building,” he said.
He also appealed to members to ensure that first-time and young MPs get adequate opportunities to speak. “New MPs are frustrated because they are not getting a chance to raise constituency issues. Irrespective of party, they must be given space. There are many places to do drama, but not here,” he remarked.
The Winter Session, beginning Monday, will have 15 sittings.
