Tehran, Oct 20: Iran has executed a man convicted of spying for Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, the country’s judiciary announced on Sunday. The execution comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv following a 12-day war in June.

According to the judiciary’s official outlet Mizan Online, the unnamed man was hanged on Saturday in Qom Prison after Iran’s Supreme Court upheld his death sentence and rejected his appeal for pardon. “The execution of this spy was carried out after confirmation by the Supreme Court and rejection of his clemency request,” said Kazem Mousavi, Chief Justice of Qom province.

Authorities claimed the man had established contact with Israeli intelligence in October 2023 and was arrested between January and February 2024. Investigators alleged that he had confessed to cooperating with Mossad and transmitting confidential information online.

This marks the latest in a string of executions targeting alleged Israeli agents and terrorists in recent weeks. Earlier this month, Iran executed six men in Khuzestan province on terrorism charges, days after another man identified as one of Israel’s “top spies” was hanged. Another individual, named Roozbeh Vadi, was executed for allegedly sharing sensitive details about a nuclear scientist killed during the June conflict.

Iran, which carries out executions by hanging, remains the world’s second-highest executor after China, according to Amnesty International and other human rights groups.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards reported that at least four tribal leaders were killed in an attack in the restive southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan. The Guards blamed “mercenary groups affiliated with the Israeli regime” for the assault, though they did not specify which organisation was responsible.

Iranian officials have repeatedly accused armed groups operating in Sistan-Baluchistan of having links to Israel, branding them as terrorist organisations.
