Sambalpur, Oct 31: The head of the Chemistry Department at Sambalpur University sustained grievous injuries after a former sweeper allegedly stabbed him with a knife on the university campus on Friday morning.

The injured professor, Satyanarayan Sahu, 47, suffered a deep wound on the left side of his abdomen and was immediately shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, for treatment. The accused, identified as 26-year-old Krupasindhu Bag, fled the scene after the incident, which took place around 9.30 am.

Additional SP Ajay Kumar Mishra said Bag had allegedly been behaving inappropriately over the past few weeks, including reporting to work in an inebriated condition. Following this conduct, the department had terminated his services. Police suspect that Bag held a grudge against the professor over the issue.

According to police, Sahu was walking towards his office when Bag approached him and attacked him with a sharp weapon, apparently aiming at his chest. The professor managed to ward off the blow, but the knife struck him in the abdomen.

Sahu reportedly tried to catch hold of the attacker, but Bag managed to escape. Burla police rushed to the university campus after receiving information and launched an investigation.

The accused remains absconding. Police are continuing their investigation to establish the exact motive behind the attack and trace Bag.f
