Mumbai, Oct 29: Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan has picked Ranveer Singh over Ranbir Kapoor when asked whose performance was more impactful in Dhurandhar and Animal, respectively.

The question came during the latest episode of Koffee With Karan Season 9, which featured Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan as guests, with Arjun Kapoor joining them for the rapid-fire round. Host Karan Johar asked Varun, “Ranveer Singh in Dhurandhar or Ranbir Kapoor in Animal, which one is a more impactful performance?” Varun replied without hesitation, “I would definitely say Ranveer in Dhurandhar.”

Interestingly, in the opening episode of the season, Karan was asked to choose between Ranbir and Ranveer as the more versatile actor. He responded, “You don't choose between brilliance.”

Ranbir delivered one of the most talked-about performances of his career in Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal (2023). He played Ranvijay Singh, a man whose complicated relationship with his father drives him towards violence and revenge. The film drew criticism for its portrayal of women and its depiction of toxic masculinity, but Ranbir's intense performance attracted widespread attention. Animal went on to become a major box-office success, collecting around Rs 915 crore worldwide.

Ranbir is now awaiting the release of Ramayana, a mythological epic directed by Nitesh Tiwari and reportedly mounted on a budget of Rs 4,000 crore. The film also stars Sai Pallavi, Yash, Sunny Deol and Ravie Dubey, among others. It is planned as a two-part release, with the first instalment scheduled to hit theatres on November 5, 2026.

Meanwhile, Ranveer has moved away from his trademark flamboyant screen persona with his restrained and intense portrayal of Hamza Ali Mazari, an Indian spy operating undercover in Pakistan, in Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar franchise. His performance and physical transformation have won appreciation from audiences, while the films have emerged as major box-office successes. Dhurandhar reportedly collected more than Rs 1,300 crore worldwide, while Dhurandhar: The Revenge earned around Rs 1,800 crore globally and became the first Indian film to cross the Rs 1,000-crore mark at the domestic box office.

On the work front, Varun is reportedly set to lead the next film by Rahul Pandey, director of Maamla Legal Hai. The yet-to-be-titled project is said to be backed by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, though an official announcement is awaited. Varun also has Bhediya 2 in the pipeline. The actor announced the film in 2023, and it was initially expected to release in 2025. However, fans are still waiting for an update on its release.
