Dubai, Sep 28: In a spirit of deep devotion and joyous togetherness, the United Pangalites (UPA) came together on the afternoon of September 21, at Smana Hotel Bur Dubai to celebrate Monthi Fest a feast commemorating the Nativity of Mother Mary. This much awaited gathering brought together the Pangalite community and their well-wishers reaffirming the enduring ties of faith, heritage, and unity among the diaspora in the UAE.
The celebration began with a warm and graceful welcome address, setting a heartfelt tone that gently carried through the afternoon. A touching prayer dance, performed by the children of UPA members Anica D’Souza and Viola Alva, captivated the gathering with its quiet sincerity and reverence. With every step and gesture, the young dancers beautifully reflected the innocence, faith, and devotion that lie at the heart of Monthi Fest.

In one of the most touching moments of the day, a floral procession saw children gently circling the beautifully adorned statue of Infant Mary (Monti Saibin). Holding vibrant blossoms, they offered their prayers with pure hearts, echoing timeless traditions carried from their homeland.
A serene prayer session followed, bringing the community into a collective moment of gratitude and spiritual connection. Traditional Konkani hymns ‘Sokkod Sangatha Meliya and Moriek Hogolsia’ filled the room with warmth and familiarity as children showered flowers before Infant Mary. The ritual was completed with the distribution of blessed Novem, marking the sacred beginning of the festivities.
With grace and charm the event was hosted by Veena Alva and Sohan Castelino, who guided the day’s celebrations with ease and enthusiasm. The event was honoured by the presence of esteemed guests including Fr Victor Fernandes, Walter Nandalike, Frank D’Souza, and Joseph Mathias coordinator of St Mary’s Mangalorean Community (SMMC) and managing director of Merit Freight Systems. UPA president Sweeny D’Souza extended a warm and heartfelt welcome to all guests and dignitaries, expressing gratitude for their continued support.
A truly heartwarming segment was the Pangalites Got Talent competition. With grace and confidence children took to the stage to sing, dance, play instruments and showcase their artistic side each performance a reminder of the vibrant talent within the community. Applause and encouragement flowed freely celebrating not just skill, but also courage and creativity. Among the standout performers, Christine D’Souza bagged the first place in the 4–10 age category, while Jace Quadras and Reece Quadras were declared joint winners in the 11–15 age group. Every participant was honoured with a consolation prize recognizing their spirit and participation and ensuring that each child walked away feeling appreciated and inspired.
The mood then shifted to light-hearted joy as Sohan led the audience through lively spot games, drawing smiles and laughter from all corners. The excitement reached new heights with an engaging round of housie, in which attendees young and old alike, participated with great enthusiasm.
Adding to the festive spirit, UPA announced an upcoming drawing competition for children an initiative designed to nurture artistic expression and keep the flame of cultural celebration glowing brightly in the younger generation.
Of course, no Monthi Fest would be complete without the traditional Novem Jevaan a true culinary tribute to the occasion. Guests were welcomed to a lovingly prepared vegetarian meal. From time-honoured favourites to the familiar sweetness of vorn, each bite carried with it a sense of nostalgia, offering a warm reminder of home, heritage, and the shared joy of community.
