Udupi, Sep 11: CSI Lombard Memorial Mission Hospital Udupi hosted a two-day programme, “Nutri Fest,” at the LMH multipurpose hall to create awareness among the public on nutrition.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Sushil Jathanna, director of CSI Lombard memorial mission hospital Udupi along with other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Sushil Jathanna said “It is a real surprise to see the number of students attending this program today. We now see a growing epidemic of obesity and overweight in India. Children as young as 14 are overweight in some cases. Obesity and overweight cause many illnesses, from the brain to the heart and many other organs. We live to eat, but how well we eat determines how well we live. These days everyone is more interested in outside food. These processed foods contain high sugar, high salt and many colouring agents. Our ancestors ate well and worked hard so they lived a longer life. Today Students and others do not exercise well, sports and games are not given importance these days. Increased diabetes and blood pressure are the main causes of heart diseases. Students should be aware of their choices and take healthy foods.”
Dr Kevin Pandian, of the Community Medicine Department at CSI Lombard Memorial Hospital addressing the students, said, “Above 30 a large number of people are getting diabetes. Knowledge is available but how to apply it to daily life is the question we are discussing today. Today’s program will give in-depth information about food consumption and how it will affect individual health.”
Giving insights about the diseases occurring due to wrong food habits. Dr Vaibhav of the General Medicine Department at CSI Lombard Memorial Hospital said, “One in two Indians are at risk of developing metabolic disease. It includes diabetes, fatty liver, cardio vascular disease and others. Most of us overestimate the amount of physical activity and underestimate the calories we take in. This program is a real eye-opener for all of us.”
The programme was attended by administrative officer Deena Parabhavathi, Dr Roshan Pais, principal of paramedical and allied health sciences; Dr Biju Soman, principal of the School of Nursing; Veena Menezes, principal of General Nursing and Midwifery.
