Gaza, Sep 24: At least 36 Palestinians were killed on Tuesday as Israeli forces pounded Gaza from air and ground, even as world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) demanded an immediate halt to the two-year conflict.
Satellite imagery analysed by Al Jazeera shows Israeli armoured units tightening their grip on Gaza City, with tanks entering the Nassr neighbourhood less than a kilometre from al-Shifa Hospital. The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) warned that the assault is “inflicting terror on the Palestinian population” and forcing tens of thousands to flee.

Addressing the UNGA, US President Donald Trump urged that the Gaza war “must stop immediately,” but rejected recognition of a Palestinian state as a “reward for Hamas.” Trump also met leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Türkiye, Indonesia and Pakistan, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan calling the talks “very fruitful.”
Medical facilities in Gaza continue to be targeted. Shelling destroyed Gaza City’s main medical centre, injuring at least two medical workers and preventing the evacuation of vital supplies, local officials said. Other clinics in Tal al-Hawa and the Shati refugee camp have been destroyed or besieged.
Thousands of Palestinians fleeing north Gaza have sought shelter in central and southern areas, including the Israeli-designated “safe zone” of al-Mawasi, which has also faced repeated attacks. Health officials warn of severe shortages of food, water and medical care, with disease spreading in overcrowded camps.
In the occupied West Bank, violence is escalating. Armed settlers shot dead a Palestinian man in al-Mughayyir village near Ramallah, while Israeli forces raided towns around Nablus and closed the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge, the main crossing to Jordan.
A recent UN commission report accuses Israel of actions that meet the legal definition of genocide, citing forced displacement, starvation tactics and systematic destruction of infrastructure. Global leaders at the UNGA have called for an urgent ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access to avert further catastrophe.
