Fritz fires Team World to Laver Cup glory with back-to-back wins over Alcaraz and Zverev

San Francisco, Sep 22: Taylor Fritz delivered a commanding performance to lead Team World to Laver Cup victory, defeating Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6(4) just a night after toppling world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in a career-defining weekend.

With his two stunning wins over Top 3 opponents, Fritz secured five of Team World’s 15 points in their 15-9 triumph over Team Europe — marking their third Laver Cup title in four years.

In Sunday’s deciding clash, Fritz came out with intent, using penetrating groundstrokes to take control early, even in San Francisco's slower court conditions. Though Zverev struggled physically at the start, he rallied midway through the second set, breaking Fritz and threatening to push the match further.

But the American was undeterred. As the pressure mounted, Fritz elevated his game, matching Zverev shot-for-shot in a tense tiebreak before sealing the win and clinching the Cup for Team World.

“It’s impossible not to give everything when you’ve got legends like Andre Agassi jumping out of their seat cheering for you,” said Fritz, referencing Team World’s new captain. The American tennis icon made a winning debut on the Laver Cup sidelines, bringing infectious energy and leadership throughout the event.

Earlier in the day, Team Europe briefly reignited their hopes when Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud picked up wins. Alcaraz’s victory in the third match of the day set up a pivotal showdown between Zverev and Fritz — a match Europe needed to win to stay alive. But Fritz had other plans.

Before that, Alex de Minaur played a crucial role in setting the stage for Fritz, defeating Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-4. The Aussie held firm in a tense final service game, surviving three break points at 0/40 to push Team World to a commanding 12-6 lead, needing just one more win to seal the title.

Ultimately, it was Fritz who answered the call. With his back-to-back statement wins, Team World not only claimed the Cup but also showcased the depth and rising dominance of its roster.

For Andre Agassi, the victory was a dream start to his captaincy — and for Team World, another reminder that the tide in international team tennis is steadily turning in their favor.
