Mumbai, Sep 16: With a low-pressure area forming over both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, Maharashtra is once again witnessing heavy rainfall, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the festive season—Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali—will continue to see showers.
Since the night of September 14, rain has intensified across the state, and on the third consecutive day, September 16, downpours persisted, keeping the sun hidden. According to the IMD, light to moderate showers are expected today across Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Marathwada, with isolated heavy spells in some regions.

The low-pressure system that developed over Andhra Pradesh has now moved towards Maharashtra, triggering heavy rainfall in several parts, including north Mumbai. Following Sunday’s intense rain, the IMD has forecast more moderate showers today and issued an orange alert for Raigad and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar districts and the ghats of Pune, while the rest of Maharashtra remains under a yellow alert. Mumbai city and suburbs are likely to remain cloudy with the possibility of heavy rainfall.
In Konkan, districts like Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are likely to see light to moderate rain, with chances of thunderstorms and lightning. In Madhya Maharashtra, including Pune, Kolhapur and Nashik, moderate showers are expected, along with scattered light rain. Vidarbha’s Nagpur, Amravati, Bhandara and Chandrapur are also set for showers accompanied by thunder and lightning. Marathwada districts such as Latur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Otor will experience cloudy to light rainy conditions.
Nationally, the IMD says the monsoon will remain active through September, with heavy rain forecast over the next two days in Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and West Bengal. Many of these regions are likely to witness continued monsoon activity.
