Bomb threat at Mumbai’s Nair Hospital sparks panic amid citywide security alert

Mumbai, Sept 7: Mumbai’s Nair Hospital was placed on high alert late Saturday night after the dean received a threatening email alleging a bomb had been planted on the premises. The email, sent around 11:00 p.m., triggered swift action from hospital authorities, who immediately contacted Mumbai Police.

A thorough search was conducted by police and security personnel across the hospital campus, but no explosives or suspicious items were found.

In response, police launched a probe to trace the origin of the email and identify the sender. Patrolling and surveillance have been intensified in and around the hospital, and officials have urged the public to remain alert and report anything unusual.

The incident comes amid increased security across Mumbai following a spate of similar threats. Just two days earlier, Mumbai Airport was targeted with a bomb threat email, followed by a WhatsApp message claiming that 14 terrorists had entered the city with 400 kg of RDX in 34 vehicles, linked to a group calling itself ‘Lashkar-e-Jihadi.’

That message raised alarms just ahead of the Anant Chaturthi festivities and was later traced to Noida, where police arrested Ashwani Kumar — an astrologer and Vastu expert. Kumar had allegedly sent the hoax message using the identity of a former friend, Firoz, with whom he had a legal dispute in 2023 that resulted in a three-month jail term.

According to Noida police, Kumar intended to frame Firoz as an act of revenge. He was handed over to Mumbai Police, and a case was registered at Worli police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Multiple phones, SIM cards, and digital devices were seized from his residence.

Authorities have reiterated their appeal to citizens to avoid spreading rumours and assured that security measures have been further tightened across Mumbai.
