New York, Sep 6: Reigning US Open champion Jannik Sinner is eyeing another "special" moment as he prepares to face Carlos Alcaraz for the men’s title on Sunday, following his fifth consecutive Grand Slam final appearance.
Sinner defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday, aiming for his fifth career major and cementing his place among Rod Laver, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic as men reaching all four Grand Slam finals in a season.
The 24-year-old Italian captured the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year but fell to 22-year-old Alcaraz in a five-set French Open epic. Sinner, whose world number one ranking is on the line, said, “Sunday is a very special day and an amazing final again. We are two different players now, with different confidence too.”
Their rivalry began at the 2022 US Open quarter-finals, a marathon five-hour match that Alcaraz won en route to his first major. Sinner now aims to defend his crown and make history as the first man to do so since Federer in 2008.
