Mumbai waterlogged: Heavy rains disrupt traffic, schools closed

Mumbai, Aug 18: Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Monday, causing waterlogging in several areas and severe traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall across the city.

Traffic snarls were reported on the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle, while areas like Gandhi Market in Sion and Andheri Subway faced significant waterlogging, with the subway being closed. In response, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for all afternoon-shift schools and directed civic departments to remain on high alert.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions. The BMC helpline (1916) is available for assistance.

Rainfall recorded between 8:30 am and 11:30 am included Tata Power Chembur 91.5 mm, Vikhroli 78.5 mm, Juhu 60 mm, Sion 58.5 mm, Bandra 50 mm, Santacruz 47.2 mm, and Colaba 29 mm.

Airlines issued travel advisories due to traffic congestion. Akasa Air urged passengers to plan extra travel time to the airport, while IndiGo advised commuters to monitor flight updates and reach early.
