Miami, Jul 31: In a dramatic finish that left fans on the edge of their seats, Lionel Messi once again proved why he is regarded as one of football’s greatest. The Argentine superstar assisted twice, including a decisive pass in the final seconds, as Inter Miami edged past Mexican side Atlas 2-1 in their Leagues Cup opener on Thursday night.
Back on the pitch after serving a one-match suspension for skipping Major League Soccer's All-Star game alongside teammate Jordi Alba, Messi wasted no time making an impact. His first assist came in the 58th minute, setting up Telasco Segovia to put Miami in the lead.
Atlas found the equalizer in the 82nd minute through Rivaldo Lozano, setting the stage for a tense finale.
With the match seemingly heading towards a draw, Messi delivered a perfectly timed ball to Marcelo Weigandt, who slotted home in the 96th minute. Initially ruled offside, the goal was awarded after a VAR review, sparking celebrations among Miami fans.
The game also marked the debut of Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, Messi’s longtime international teammate, who recently joined Inter Miami. The match saw fierce competition in the first half, with both sides failing to break the deadlock despite several chances. Miami goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo stood firm with three key saves, while Luis Suárez narrowly missed just before halftime, rattling the crossbar.
With this performance, Messi now boasts five assists in July, in addition to his eight goals, earning him the MLS Player of the Month award. Inter Miami, meanwhile, continues to enjoy a strong run in league play, improving to 4-1-1 for the month.
