New Delhi, Jul 29: Legendary Indian cricketer Kapil Dev has weighed in on the much-talked-about comparison between England’s Ben Stokes and India’s Ravindra Jadeja, asserting that the latter currently stands ahead in terms of performance as an all-rounder.
Speaking at a recent event, Kapil lauded Stokes for his achievements — especially as he nears the historic milestone of 7,000 runs and 200 wickets in Test cricket. However, the former Indian skipper opined that Jadeja, with 3,697 runs and 326 wickets, is delivering more consistent value to the team.
“I don’t want to compare, but I still feel Jadeja is ahead. He is performing far better,” Kapil was quoted as saying by India Today.
The 1983 World Cup-winning captain also came out in strong support of current India captain Shubman Gill, who is leading a youthful Indian side in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. With India trailing 1-2, questions have been raised over Gill’s leadership. But Kapil urged critics to give the youngster time to grow into the role.
“This is his first series; he will make mistakes. But over time, he will learn, and this team will win,” Kapil said, highlighting that any new captain and squad requires time to settle.
He also shared his thoughts on star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, praising his resilience and longevity in the demanding format of Test cricket despite his unique bowling action.
“We never thought Bumrah would last so long in Tests, given the stress his body endures. But he’s still contributing, and hats off to him,” said Kapil. He emphasized the importance of managing Bumrah’s workload as the bowler continues to be crucial to India’s plans.
India is currently engaged in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, with Bumrah in action. However, reports suggest he is likely to miss the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, scheduled at London’s Kennington Oval from July 31 to August 4.
