Mumbai, Jul 28: Businessman Sunjay Kapur, former husband of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, passed away on June 12 at the age of 53. While initial reports attributed his death to cardiac arrest, fresh details suggest that the fatal incident may have been triggered by a severe allergic reaction caused by a bee sting.
According to sources, Sunjay was playing a game of polo when he suddenly collapsed. It is now suspected that he accidentally swallowed a bee during the game, which stung him and triggered anaphylaxis — a life-threatening allergic reaction — ultimately leading to cardiac arrest.
Sunjay Kapur, who once made headlines for his turbulent marriage with Karisma Kapoor, had long remained in the public eye due to his personal life. The two tied the knot in 2003 in a lavish ceremony held at Karisma’s ancestral home, Krishna Raj bungalow in Mumbai. Though the marriage initially appeared stable, the couple filed for divorce by mutual consent in 2014.
However, the divorce soon turned acrimonious. Karisma accused Sunjay of domestic violence, while Sunjay claimed the actress had married him for financial gain. The public spat escalated when Karisma’s father, veteran actor Randhir Kapoor, strongly defended his daughter, labelling Sunjay as “third-class” and accusing him of marital misconduct.
“Everyone knows our credentials. We are Kapoors. We don't need to run after anyone's money… Sunjay never cared for his wife. He has been giving bull*** to her and living with another woman without divorce,” Randhir Kapoor had told Mumbai Mirror at the time.
In 2016, the couple reached a settlement. As per reports, Karisma received Sunjay’s father’s house in Khar and a bond investment worth Rs 14 crore for the welfare of their two children, Samaira and Kiaan, yielding a monthly interest of around Rs 10 lakh.
Before Karisma, Sunjay was married to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani. After his divorce from Karisma, he married model-actress Priya Sachdev in 2017 and welcomed a son, Azarius, in 2018.
Sunjay Kapur's unexpected demise has left many in shock, with tributes pouring in from the business and film fraternity.
