Mangaluru/Udupi, July 28: With heavy rains lashing the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi over the past few weeks, schools and pre-university colleges have seen repeated holiday declarations. To make up for the lost instructional days, the education department has decided to conduct full-day classes on Saturdays starting after August 15.
The directive is expected to be in effect for about four months in both districts, depending on the weather situation.

In Udupi district, where rains have already led to the closure of schools on multiple days, authorities have instructed schools to hold afternoon sessions on Saturdays to recover the missed portions and ensure academic continuity.
So far, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has declared a total of seven rain holidays. Some taluks were given additional days off. In Udupi, the Byndoor educational block saw eight rain holidays, while other parts of the district had up to seven days off. To compensate, schools have been directed to hold classes on Saturday afternoons.
Implementation from August 15
Dakshina Kannada DDPI Govinda Madivala told Udayavani, “Rain holidays were announced keeping student safety in mind. As a result, we need to recover the lost class time. All BEOs have already been instructed to plan for afternoon classes on Saturdays. After August 15, we will officially implement full-day Saturday classes.”
Udupi DDPI Lokesh added, “We have issued instructions for full-day Saturday classes till October. If there are special or emergency meetings, schools may compensate with extra sessions on subsequent Saturdays. The directive may be extended depending on the monsoon. There are no plans to hold classes on Sundays.”
